Reopening on the 13th of September, after being closed for roughly three years, is Greenmeadow Community Farm, located in Cwmbran. This place is coming back stronger than ever with a massive facelift! It’s a big deal for everyone around here and beyond. I’ve always loved farms like this – they’re great for families… and big kids like me, with animals to see [I couldn’t wait to hold a guinea pig in the petting room] and space to run around [I didn’t do that!]. This renovation has turned it into something special, and I was so excited to check it out when I was invited before the public opening.
Greenmeadow has been a working farm for over 250 years on about 120 acres. I was informed that by the late 1980s, it was at risk of being shut down and turned into something else, like housing. But the local community stepped in and saved it – and rightly so. They fought to keep it as a public spot, and in the 1990s, it opened as a visitor attraction run by Torfaen Borough Council. Since then, minus the few years of renovations, it’s been a go-to place for seeing rare breeds of animals, such as pedigree sheep and pigs, and learning about farm life. They’ve even got some alpacas; if you’ve never seen one up close, they’re the cutest things! It’s not just history – it’s a living piece of Wales’ rural past.
For the local community, Greenmeadow means a lot. In Cwmbran and Torfaen, it’s more than a farm; it’s a hub where kids can connect with nature, families can spend a day out without breaking the bank, as it’s free to enter, and people learn about where food comes from. It has – and I know it will – bring visitors from farther away too, and for you reading this in and around Cardiff, it’s not that far at all. Before it closed for its revamp the last time around, it was ‘the place’ for school trips, events, and even just quiet walks. Losing it temporarily must have been so tough, especially for the locals, but now it’s back; it feels even more special than ever… as if it’s never been away.
They’ve really pulled out all the stops for this amazing renovation project to make it modern and sustainable, with new animal barns, better play areas for kids, and improved paths for easier access, and to note, some of the paths will create themselves by the foot traffic, further building on the organic feel of the place.. A brand-new café and restaurant called The Farmer’s Table, set in a fancy oak-beam conservatory, seats 90 people. It’s worth mentioning that the local councillors have been very instrumental in pushing for the changes at Greenmeadow, and no matter what your political allegiances are, the Welsh Government gave a £1.56 million grant, with a fair wedge of it going towards a state-of-the-art ground source heat pump system. Money has been spent here on something for the people to enjoy for generations.
I know this project isn’t just about opening doors again; it’s more about giving back to a much-loved place that’s evolved with the times. It only shows what can happen when people – and the Welsh Government – care enough to invest in their community with places like Greenmeadow. So, if you’re nearby, head over. Me, well, I can’t wait to come back and see the animals!
