Cardiff Rock School Seeks Guitar Heroes

13/02/2019

A Cardiff rock school is on the lookout for young guitarists to complete the line up in a string of bands.

The Rock Project Cardiff teaches 7-18 year olds how to sing, play the drums, bass and guitar in weekly two-hour sessions.

But the group of teen and pre-teen musicians, who meet in Fairwater, are desperate for guitarists to join their bands.

Organiser Ben Tiffin said: “The Rock Project Cardiff launched after Christmas and we’ve had a fantastic response, with a strong intake of drummers, bass players and singers, but are strangely lacking guitarists. It almost goes without saying they are an essential component in any band.

“South Wales has a great tradition of rock bands, I honestly have no idea why we are lacking guitarists.”

Ben, who plays guitar for the rock band The Flames and teaches RE in a comprehensive school said The Rock Project is very different to one on one music lessons.

“All of the tutors are gigging, professional musicians and the lessons are taught in small groups, which helps build friendships, makes it more fund and less intense than one-to-one tuition,” Ben said.

The Rock Project is divided into two sessions for 7-11 year olds (5pm-7pm) and 12-18 year olds (7pm-9pm). One half of each session involves the students being tutored by professional, gigging musicians in their chosen instrument, while in the second part they put what they’ve learnt into practice to come together and play as a band.

“We hope The Rock Project can also create a lasting musical legacy in Cardiff by helping to bring bands together,” Ben
said. “Our main aim is to help young people learn to play the music they love, build friendships and have some fun along the way.

“With such a vibrant music scene in Cardiff we have plenty of opportunities for them to appear live on stage which is a huge thrill no matter what your age, and helps build confidence.”http://www.cardiff-times.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/rock1.jpg

Students from The Rock Project not only get to perform in local gigs but also come together for a full-scale, end of year rock concert in summer.

The Rock Project takes place every Tuesday at St Peter’s Community Hall in Fairwater. All of the instruments are supplied.
