COLEG GWENT CELEBRATES ESTYN SUCCESS!

23/01/2020

In October 2019, Coleg Gwent’s Learn Welsh Gwent department was routinely inspected by Estyn, the inspectors of quality and standards in education and training in Wales, and are now celebrating the findings of the report published last week by the independent body.

The main findings were that “Wellbeing and attitudes to learning” and “Care, support and guidance” are ‘Excellent’. Standards, Care, support and guidance and Leadership and management were judged to be ‘Good’.

The Inspection team noted that the staff “are very aware of their contribution towards realising the Welsh Government’s vision of creating a million Welsh speakers by 2050.” and had “succeeded in creating an ethos that promotes the Welsh language in the community through the areas of old Gwent, which permeates all aspects of its work.”

Particular praise was made of the way Learn Welsh Gwent is “an inclusive and supportive community of enthusiastic and ambitious learners, in which nearly all learners feel safe in their learning environment and are very highly motivated to learn Welsh.”

Geraint Wilson-Price, Head of Learn Welsh Gwent, said:

I am very proud of the work staff and learners are doing across the region and so very happy to see the results of everybody’s hard work being recognised in this way by Estyn. Learn Welsh Gwent is committed to working with the National Centre for Learning Welsh to encourage more people from across Gwent (and across the world through Skype) to learn Welsh and continue their learning successfully with us. This report clearly shows that success.”

The fantastic achievement of the Estyn report comes at the beginning of what is set to be an exciting year for Coleg Gwent as a whole. In addition to its core activities as one of Gwent’s leading education provider, 2020 will see Coleg Gwent open its newest state-of-the-campus in Cwmbran (the Torfaen Learning Zone), the introduction of Personal Learning Accounts for employed individuals looking to change their careers, and its enhanced part-time curriculum which includes professional qualifications aimed at employers.
