Cruse Bereavement Care Cymru and Alzheimer’s Society Cymru Launch New Dementia Support Project

08/07/2020

Cruse Bereavement Care Cymru, part of the UK’s largest bereavement charity Cruse Bereavement Care, are launching a new dementia support project Supporting loss along the journey with dementia, in partnership with Alzheimer’s Society Cymru.

Following on from the success of the first project of the partnership, Bereaved by Dementia, which supported people with dementia and their families following a bereavement, this new project will focus on improving access to pre-bereavement support. The coronavirus pandemic will have made it an even more difficult time to be living with, and caring for someone with, dementia. It is more important now than ever that people have access to the support they need.

When someone is diagnosed with dementia, it is common for them and their families to experience feelings of loss. This project will support people diagnosed with all forms of dementia, and their families, in managing and better coping with these feelings of loss, from diagnosis onwards.

The new project will, amongst other intended outcomes:

  • Recruit and train new volunteers
  • Develop a new training module
  • Deliver information awareness raising sessions to external organisations
  • Develop fact sheets for people with dementia and those that care for them
  • Raise awareness of the importance of support in pre-bereavement
  • Support people to cope with pre-bereavement loss and grief linked to dementia

Maxine Norrish, at Cruse Bereavement Care Cymru said:

“We are delighted to be launching our new project Supporting loss along the journey with dementia, in partnership with Alzheimer’s Society Cymru.

“There are currently over 45,000 people living with dementia in Wales. Through this new project we are hoping to provide support to people affected by dementia from diagnosis, as their lives inevitably change.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, and embarking on this new project together to further support people living with dementia, and their families.”

Sue Phelps, Alzheimer’s Society Cymru Country Director said:

“We are delighted to be building on the success of our partnership with Cruse to deliver more support for people with dementia, their families and carers, right from the point of diagnosis – which can be an enormously complex and emotional time – and onwards. Improving access to pre-bereavement support and helping people better cope with the feelings of loss and grief through their journey is vital to helping people live well with dementia.”
