In live theatre, the show must go on, no matter the circumstance. …Earnest? Fully embodying this motif, it offers a fast-paced, thrilling environment filled with satire and embracing a panto esc style.
…Earnest? Initially debuted at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and has since become a fan favourite, with audience members returning time and time again to help scaffold each performance into an exhilarating and unpredictable experience.
A lively crowd filled the space, and their energy carried the momentum and pace of the performance. The improvisation of all cast members was cleverly executed, showcasing the talent of the professional cast. This unique show, driven largely by audience participation and interaction, kept people on edge, slightly uneasy about whether or not they would be called to make their theatrical debut. When a lead failed to make their appearance in the show, Josh Haberfield, playing Simon Slough, playing the character of the director, had to think on his feet and pull a member of the audience onstage to fill the role.
Ultimately, the show’s unpredictability is part of its charm. With clever nods to the traditional showing of The Importance of Being Earnest audience and guidance from the ‘professional’ actors, there remained a constant element of surprise and suspense. You never quite know how an audience member will react when thrown into the spotlight, but that only adds to the comedy and satire nature of the production.
Director and co-writer Simon Paris said:
“We are very excited to bring …Earnest? back to audiences across the country and share our unique blend of chaos, comedy, and heartfelt storytelling. This show celebrates the magic of live theatre—where anything can happen and often does. With its playful twists and interactive surprises, we invite audiences to step into a world where every moment is delightfully unpredictable.”
Perhaps the most promising aspect is the improvisational nature of the show. Each performance is different, encouraging audiences to return again and again for a new thrilling experience. That being said, audience interaction is vital in carrying the show, adding a unique take on the overall performance. With real-time interactions, it was only organised chaos, but that made it a joyful spectacle.
The house lights remain on for a large part of the performance, creating a shared space between the audience and actors, breaking the fourth wall and everything in between. That said, if the crowd is flat, things could get awkward fast. Thankfully, this audience was ready for a good time, and they definitely had one.
The use of props was equally fantastic, each seemingly tailored to the performance, with both regional and national reference peppered throughout, along with specific references to 21st century pop culture.
A notable highlight was Graham’s rendition of a physical theatre-style drama subsection, played by Rhys Tees. Audience members were hysterically laughing out loud, due to his ‘sophisticated’ yet comedic interlude.
As the show continues its UK tour, and with critics eager to see it land on the West End, there’s no doubt it is a rising hit. Audiences will keep coming back for a unique, uplifting experience every time.
If you’re all about comedy sensations, and love the buzz of audience participation and panto-esque madness, then …Earnest? Is for you!
