After moving to Cardiff following the Russo-Ukrainian War, Karyna Lohvynenko turned upheaval into opportunity. While pursuing a master’s degree in the city, Karyna launched her eponymous brand, Nenko, breathing new life into vintage fashion as she rebuilds her own.
“Everything changed overnight – my home, my plans, my sense of stability,” she recalls. “Suddenly, I found myself in a new country, in a new city, with nothing certain ahead. But what made all the difference was the warmth of the people here. Cardiff is incredibly welcoming – everyone tried to help, and that kindness gave me the strength to start again.”
Karyna’s passion for unique, sustainable fashion soon became a mission: to restore forgotten blazers, while building a fresh chapter for herself. Completing her bachelor’s at Cardiff Metropolitan University also helped her find community and support in an unfamiliar city.
Nenko specialises in upcycling vintage blazers, blending handmade details with timeless design. Every piece is one-of-a-kind, sourced from local charity shops, markets, and vintage stores, restored with fabrics that carry history from Scottish tweed to Italian silk. The brand champions sustainability, quiet luxury and craftsmanship, celebrating details like pearls, brooches and delicate lace.
“When I first arrived, I didn’t want to buy new things,” Karyna explains, “I was afraid I might lose them all over again. So, I started working with what I had, giving garments a second life, and the idea quickly became a philosophy for myself too.”
Support from The King’s Trust and Santander has been crucial in turning Nenko into a reality. The King’s Trust (formerly The Prince’s Trust) is a global network of charities, helps young entrepreneurs develop life skills, access opportunities, and receive mentorship. With financial support and guidance, Karyna has been able to grow her brand and hopes her story will inspire others.
Building Nenko has taught Karyna valuable lessons she aims to share with others starting out. She encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to have a clear business plan, understand their competitors, research their local market and test their products to see what resonates. “Even a small survey can be very helpful,” she says, “and the clearer your idea, the easier it is for others to support you.”
Now, Karyna’s focus is on reaching more Cardiff customers through pop-ups, local boutiques, and by appointment fittings. Every stitch in a Nenko blazer reflects her journey – a story of renewal, resilience and creativity.
