Gruffalos, BFGs, and Cinderellas wanted! Welsh charity bids to break a world record

A Welsh charity is looking for 2,000 children, parents, aunts, uncles, and teachers to help them beat a world record – and raise vital funds.

Hybu, based at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, aims to break the world record for the largest of people in the same place dressed as characters from an illustrated children’s storybook.

It will stage the attempt at the Motorpoint Arena  Cardiff on July 7.

There will be themed storybook rooms, fun games for youngsters, and the chance to buy new books and meet some authors.

The charity’s founder Gill James said: “It will be an excellent day for anyone with children, nephews, or nieces but don’t forget parents, aunts and uncles are welcome to dress up and join in the fun!

“We’re asking people to come as their favourite character from an illustrated storybook, plus the book with the picture which inspired them, and our world record attempt will be invigilated by the Guinness Book of World Records rules.

“To ensure we beat the existing record of 1,576, we’ll be taking everyone’s picture in their costumes and with the books.

“That could be anything from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or the BFG, to The Gruffalo, Room On The Broom, Tracy Beaker, Peter Pan, or any of the illustrations from traditional fairy tales.

“The world record is for characters from books which were published before a film, so sadly that disqualifies characters such as Elsa from Frozen.”

Tickets for the event are priced at £5 or £17.50 for a family ticket for four people – provided at least one of them is aged under 16.

The funds raised will help Hybu continue its important work in training 16 to 18-year-olds in leadership, volunteering, and entrepreneurship, training adults in play work, working with children, leadership, and personal development, and running the charity’s successful holiday clubs across South Wales.

Anyone interested in attending can book tickets and find more details here: https://www.hybu.co.uk/worldrecord.

Tickets must be bought before the day of the event which will be staged between 12.30pm and 4.30pm, with the count starting at 2.30pm.
