Nathalene is taking part in the At Home Winter Wonderwheels Challenge powered by Marvel

Nathalene had a stroke while she was still in the womb and was born with cerebral palsy. This has affected her movements down the left side of her body.

Her family and their supporters fundraise for regular month-long constraint induced movement therapy (CIMT), which has helped her regain the use of her left hand. Fundraising for Nathalene’s therapies as well as for accommodation and other costs around the sessions continues.

Mum Katie Szekely, 31, from Pentwynmawr, said:

‘We’ve been fundraising since last January and the community have been right behind us, donating items for us to auction, some men did a sponsored leg waxing, a table-top sale and a local dance school held a virtual ‘pass the bucket’ fundraising event.’

Between 20 November to 5 December 2021 Nathaline will be taking part in the Winter Wonderwheels challenge.

The established event series is a countrywide disability sports event which encourages children and their chosen sidekicks to complete 1,5 or 10km distance, however they wish. The winter round will be happening between November 20 and December 5 and for the first time has gone back to holding a face-to-face mass participation version at Dorney Lake in Windsor on December 5, one of the main sites featured in the 2012 London Olympics. Participants, can run, walk, skip and wheel their way around the lake and choose the distance they want to compete in. The event series is continuing its ‘At Home’ 2 week version as well, giving families a choice of how they complete their super hero challenges for the first time.

The family is being supported by children’s charity Tree of Hope which helps families fundraise for children like Nathalene with healthcare needs and provides charity status to benefit from gift aid, corporate support whilst also providing donor reassurance.

Gill Gibb, Tree of Hope CEO said: ‘We’re delighted to be helping the Szekely family with Nathalene’s fundraising. They have worked very hard and clearly have the local community behind them. We wish them all the best with their continued fundraising and with Nathalene’s treatment.’
