New cargo arrives in Cardiff Bay as The Dock opens doors for the first time

06/05/2016

A new bar and kitchen located at the heart of Cardiff Bay will this week open its doors for the first time, creating 60 jobs following a £1.25m refurbishment.

Occupying the space formerly known as the Terra Nova, The Dock will offer eclectic food and drink menus themed on ‘world discovery’, from its iconic waterside location.

In keeping with Cardiff Bay’s history as the multicultural, cosmopolitan base from which cargo was once shipped to countries across the world, The Dock will offer unique world flavours and discovery dishes in a contemporary atmosphere suited to casual dining and drinking.

The extensive food menu will offer signature dishes, gastro specials and family favourites, as well as an extensive brunch menu and coffee offer.

Example menu items include vodka battered fish, panko crumbed goat’s cheese, and Wagyu beef. The venue will also offer discovery craft beers, exotic cocktails – such as a ‘Far East Discovery’ and ‘Hoppy Collins’ – in addition to iconic gins in new flavours and serves.

Spread across two floors – including an outside terrace – and flooded with light through floor to ceiling windows, the extensive refit has enabled a contemporary, eclectic interior that tells the historic story of the bay.

Bruce Newman, Head of Marketing for Brains, which owns The Dock, said: “Over the past decade, Cardiff Bay has established itself as a vibrant location and we’re now in a brilliant position to introduce something completely new to the area.
“With exciting world flavours and dishes, and mouth-watering twists on old classics, the menus will offer something unique, not just for the Bay but for the whole city.

“This distinctive food and drink offering, coupled with its iconic waterside location with stunning views across the Bay, will help position it as the go-to venue at the very heart of Mermaid Quay.

“The Dock will be unlike anything else the area has to offer but, importantly, will be entirely in keeping with Cardiff Bay’s important cultural and industrial heritage.”

The Dock will be a flagship business for Brains and, after the launching of The Cambrian Tap in Cardiff City Centre last year, is the latest in a range of new venues the business is opening.
Wholesale redesign has seen an island bar placed in the centre of the ground floor with a 32-foot back bar display that cuts through to the first floor carrying atmosphere and light into the first floor. Outside, an enclosed area of waterside seating has been created, affording customers exceptional views of the surrounding areas.

The Dock, which opens to guests at 7pm on Thursday 21st April, will see the creation of 60 jobs.
