RADYR COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL WIN A SPECIAL BBC CHILDREN IN NEED MEDIA WORKSHOP TO CELEBRATE SCHOOLS FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN
Media teams have visited schools across the UK delivering BBC Children in Need media workshops to celebrate secondary schools participating in the ‘Big Spotacular’ fundraising campaign, in partnership with Lloyds Bank.
BBC journalist, Nadira Tudor and independent producer/director Michael Wray, have visited Radyr Comprehensive School in Cardiff to celebrate schools across the country participating in the Big Spotacular, the schools fundraising campaign by Lloyds Bank and BBC Children in Need.
Radyr Comprehensive School was one of just 10 secondary schools nationwide to win a BBC Children in Need media workshop having been one of the first to sign up for a free Big Spotacular charity fundraising kit. Following its success in 2016, this year the Big Spotacular fundraising campaign is back and encouraging school children and teachers across the UK to go spotty for BBC Children in Need. In the weeks leading up to the Appeal Night children and teachers are dressing in spots, selling spotty cakes and goods and taking part in spotty themed sponsored challenges to raise money.
Wray, who has been working with BBC Children in Need for over five years, visited the school with Tudor to deliver a practical workshop for the children to show what is involved in creating a news report.
Speaking of the media workshop Wray said: “We wanted students to understand that anyone can report on the news and that they already have all the tools and talent they need to be successful in this field. At the start of the media session we explained how to create a news report before splitting the students into groups and asking them to create their own stories. We gave them autonomy to choose the topics they wanted to report on and use their journalistic and team working skills and imagination to research, film, edit and produce their own news reports. Many of the students said they were really inspired by the sessions and keen to learn more about careers in the media industry.”
