When I got the invite to review Honest Burgers, I made sure to arrive with an empty stomach, ready to devour as many burgers as I could—all for the sake of giving you my honest review, of course. I strolled down Church Street, which was buzzing with summer energy, every corner packed with life.
Right at the cute corner spot overlooking St John the Baptist Church sat Honest Burgers, calling my name. The outdoor seating looked super inviting at first glance, but the cool evening breeze convinced me to swap it for a warm, cozy spot inside. And thank goodness I did – I was surprised at how spacious the place was! Much bigger than it looked from outside, with long tables perfect even for big groups (hello, burger party for 12? Count me in).
To kick things off, I ordered the Tropical Rum Punch (£6.90), since the much-raved-about homemade lemonade was sadly out of stock (my friends had already hyped it up beyond measure). Now, I’ll admit—the rum punch wasn’t much of a looker, no fancy garnish or sparkle—but it made up for it in taste. With notes of cinnamon and vanilla syrup dancing in each sip, it was the sweet, punchy start I needed.
The menu is short, snappy, and super easy to navigate. You’ve got 3 types of chicken burgers, 4 beefy classics, and another trio for the vegan and veggie lovers – something for everyone without getting overwhelmed. I went straight in for the Pesto Chicken Burger, while my friend Rachel (sipping on her oh-so-classy rosé) opted for the BBQ Chicken Burger.
Despite the place being fairly packed, our food arrived surprisingly quick. The staff, all smiles were on top of everything – swift, warm, and super helpful.
My Pesto Chicken Burger (£13.95) looked divine, and the plate was stacked high with Honest’s signature rosemary salted chips. The portion? Very generous. Like, you-will-not-need-dinner-later kind of generous. The basil pesto sauce was the star of the show – herby, rich, and perfectly paired with the tender chicken and soft, buttery buns. Throw in tomato, rocket, and a dreamy brown butter mustard mayo, and honestly (pun intended), I was in burger heaven.
Rachel, meanwhile, was fully convinced hers was the better pick. Her BBQ Chicken Burger (£12.50) came packed with crispy fried chicken tenders, pickles, lettuce, melted cheese, and a smoky BBQ mayo that brought everything together in one glorious, flavour-packed bite. We both kept sneaking bites from each other’s plates – purely in the name of research, obviously.
The atmosphere? I loved it. Honest Burgers know how to do casual cool just right. If you’re lucky enough to snag a window seat, you’ll get a gorgeous view of Church Street and a taste of Cardiff city life unfolding in real time. Good food, good vibes, great burgers – what more could you ask for?
So if you’re craving a hearty, no-fuss burger with a side of buzzing city charm, Honest Burgers on Church Street is the place to be. Just maybe go with an empty stomach – you’ll thank me later.
