During my monthly routine of scavenging Albany Roads charity shops for treasures like a magpie, I discovered what would quickly become my favourite cafe in South Wales. Nestled on Wellfield Road, a hub of dining spots and boutiques, Blossom Cafe is guaranteed to call you with its pastel pink exterior and old-timey door handle.
Upon entering you will be welcomed with a girly explosion of pinks and florals. A tasteful arrangement of velvet chairs and crystal chandeliers make the ambience nothing short of whimsical. The tables are a polished marble, spotless and ready for dining. Need I tempt you more?
The decor, however, isn’t the only thing that makes the cafe special. There’s a warmth you’re welcomed with that extends beyond its pink-hued walls, a feeling rooted in the story of its owner, Selma. She had initially moved with her husband from Istanbul to complete her studies, but her passion for cooking and sharing comforting food never faded. Selma shared with Cardiff Times “We would often invite friends to our home to share our food with them, and so we dreamt of opening a café. A place where we could work with our kids and treat our customers the same way we treat guests in our home.”
The charm and spirit of Cardiff captivated the heart of Selma and her husband, and soon after they decided to move to Cardiff permanently. As the couple planted their roots in this city, Blossom Cafe was born.
The love is reflected in the menu, where one is spoilt for choice with a selection of home-baked goods. Tea cakes, cinnamon rolls, croissants, and buttery scones served with strawberry jam and rich clotted cream are some of the many delights on offer. The selection makes it difficult to choose from and is guaranteed to have you ‘umm’-ing and ‘aah’-ing upon reaching the counter.
If you struggle to make a choice (and you will), Blossom Cafe offers their ‘ultimate afternoon tea’. This features free-flowing tea, and a selection of small sandwiches, baklava, scones, macarons, brownies and more; all delivered on a dainty cake stand. Did I mention they offer gluten free and vegan versions too?
If I were to tempt you to try one pastry off the menu, it would be Blossom Cafe’s traditional British scones. Shamelessly, I have ordered them at least six times. Upon slicing the scone, the knife consistently comes out clean and reveals a perfectly baked centre. The texture is a little crumbly, rich, and floury, a superb base for your jams and creams.
Grandmas often gather at Blossom Cafe to enjoy tea, scones, and clotted cream around marble tables. This classic afternoon treat remains popular, and staff are always happy to assist—don’t forget a napkin for the crumbly scones.
I am half French, therefore very particular about my pastries. I am delighted to report the croissants are delicate, crispy, and airy. The pastry dough pulls apart finely, and the crust flakes off in thin buttery pieces. Enjoy this with one of their hot cups of chai for a cosy and gourmand afternoon treat.
But Blossom Cafe isn’t just about sweet treats, they also offer a diverse menu of breakfasts, and light lunches. Selma told Cardiff Times “Our menu is a celebration of Turkish cuisine.” So, if you’re in for an authentic Turkish Moussaka, you certainly won’t be let down. It has earned its place as Blossom Cafe’s most ordered dish for a reason.
Sustainability is at the heart of what Blossom Cafe does, with green values carefully woven into their business practice. From reducing single-use plastics wherever possible, to using seasonal and fresh ingredients to minimise food waste, their commitment to a green practice in their business is self-evident. Selma told Cardiff Times “Sustainability is not a choice; it is a responsibility.”
The coffee beans are sourced from Ricardo’s field in El Salvador… So, when you pick up your morning or afternoon coffee, you can enjoy every sip with the knowledge that your purchase supports eco-friendly practices and responsible farming—guilt-free indulgence at its best.
With numerous top-tier 5/5 hygiene ratings, and a space welcome for four-legged friends, Blossom Cafe is a must-visit for a sweet afternoon out in Cardiff. Whether you’re looking for the perfect date location, or a cosy venue for a celebration – Blossom Cafe ticks all the boxes. The cafe is also available for private hire: the perfect spot for a birthday party, baby shower, or extravagant afternoon tea event. Its picture-perfect food and aesthetic interiors have made it a favourite among local influencers and food lovers alike. So, whether you’re here for the food, the vibes, or simply the perfect Instagram shot, one thing I can guarantee. You’ll come back for more.
The cafe is well loved and popular, but the ambiance is still mellow with a soft chatter of customers and background jazz music. It’s an excellent final stop post charity shopping. It has certainly become one of my most frequented cafes, and any friend I’d invited had only raved to me about the food on the way out.
The website states “this is the place to come to feel …happy”, and to me, it does just that.
