University of Wales Air Squadron take on trio of events for RAF Charity

13/06/2017

Ellie Taylor, 21 from Hampshire, is responsible for overseeing charity events on behalf of University of Wales Air Squadron (UWAS).

Based at MOD St Athan, in the Vale of Glamorgan, a team of 14 from UWAS have already completed the Newport Half Marathon, with the Swansea Half Marathon fast approaching on 25 June, and the Cardiff Half Marathon set for October.

In addition to the trio of events, more supporters from UWAS have undertaken a rowing challenge, as well as collecting at Cardiff train station, to contribute to the final amount raised.

“We decided to take up the challenge as many of us are aspiring to be future members of the Royal Air Force or already have connections to the RAF,” explains Ellie,  “so the cause is close to home.”

“We recently learnt about the fantastic work the RAF Benevolent Fund does for Service personnel and their families and felt compelled to support them.”

“The training for the events has gone well! We all completed the first of the events, the Newport Half Marathon back in March which was a great success. We’re now all training for the Swansea Half Marathon, hoping to smash some personal bests!”

Regional Director for the RAF Benevolent Fund, Paul Hewson: “Without the support of people like Ellie and her peers, we wouldn’t be able to provide the level of support that we do to the RAF family. It’s wonderful to have University Air Squadrons championing our cause, and I’m delighted that University of Wales Air Squadron have dedicated so much time to help raise funds and awareness for the RAF’s leading welfare charity.”

The team are hoping to raise £1000 throughout the year. If you would like to support their efforts, please visit http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/UWAS_tri-half_challenge.
