Verdi’s Rigoletto comes to Cardiff Saturday 7th March

06/03/2015

ST DAVID’S HALL is set to be transformed into Renaissance Italy this weekend as Verdi’s breathtaking opera Rigoletto comes to Cardiff this Saturday night (7 March).

verdi rigoletto

Stunningly presented by the award-winning EllenKent Productions, this masterpiece is renowned for its sumptuous sets and colourful costumes. Upon its premier in 1850, censors tried to ban it due to its lurid portrayal of decadence in Renaissance Italy and scenes of nudity. Yet, it’s now rightly regarded as a classic amongst opera fans.

Based on a play written by Victor Hugo of Les Misérables fame, this plush production features magical music from the Chisinau National Philharmonic Orchestra, amazing international soloists and even a pair of regal greyhounds!

The international baritone Vladimir Dragos will be starring as Rigoletto alongside the beautiful soprano Alyona Kistenyova and Spanish Tenor Giorgi Meladze. Its tragic story revolves around the wicked Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed court jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto’s beautiful daughter Gilda.

Will there be a happy ending to this compelling tale of seduction, lust, decadence and vengeance? Find out for yourself at St David’s Hall!
