WYG to redevelop Suffolk House in Cardiff

21 March 2019: Professional services firm WYG has secured consent from Cardiff Council for the restoration and redevelopment of listed building Suffolk House in Canton, Cardiff.

Working with developer Quin & Co Limited and local architect firm Connections Design, the project will include restoration of the original villa building and development of seven three-bed family townhouses and ten one- and two-bed apartments.

Suffolk House is located within the Conway Road Conservation Area, on the junction of Llandaff Road and Romilly Road within walking distance of nearby amenities and Cardiff City Centre. Having been vacant for many years and fallen into disrepair, development now calls for considerable site enhancement and a design that cements Suffolk House’s significance as a landmark building.

Negotiations with Cardiff Council helped shape the design, including collaboration with the Council’s planning, arboriculture, and heritage teams to safeguard important site features. Proposed improvements include demolition of unsympathetic later extensions to the original villa, remedial works to the original site boundary wall, on-site amenity space, and a comprehensive compensatory tree planting and landscaping scheme.

Rob Mitchell, Associate at WYG, said: “It’s a redevelopment scheme that secures the future of Suffolk House, a site held in great affection by locals. For too long, the site has remained disused and deteriorating. The scheme represents what can be achieved when developers and local authority officers work together in good faith to deliver sensitively designed, sustainable developments that will meet the needs of future generations.”

John Pinn at Quin & Co Ltd, said: “We are delighted to obtain planning permission at the Suffolk House site.  We have been tireless in our efforts to deliver a well-considered, sensitive redevelopment of Suffolk House, where future residents will enjoy living, close to local schools, shops and parks. The scheme will breathe life back into Suffolk House which will once again represent a proud feature of the Conservation Area.  We’re pleased to play our part in that.”
