Cardiff residents concerned about spiralling global inequality can find out how ordinary people around the world are fighting to close the gap between the haves and have nots, at a free event organised by Oxfam and ActionAid on Thursday [23 February]. Activists from Kenya and Nigeria will speak about life in their home countries, where despite fast-growing economies millions of people remain desperately poor. Inequality is starkly visible, as wealthy neighbourhoods sit alongside slum communities with no water or electricity….

Builders working on the refurbishment of The Philharmonic have uncovered original features which were buried under plasterboard and floorboards after the building suffered decades of patching up. A hidden lane which ran between the former Philharmonic Hotel and the Philharmonic Hall was discovered behind a bar at the venue. Developers first thought it was a series of fireplaces, until further investigation unearthed a lane running the entire width of the building. An original tiled floor was also found…

Fiona Phillips, Alzheimer’s Society and People’s Postcode Lottery Ambassador. Both my parents had dementia so I know first-hand how isolating it can be. This is why I feel so passionately about Alzheimer’s Society’s new service ‘Side by Side’ which helps people with dementia stay connected to their communities and keep doing the things they love. Last month, I learnt more about this life enriching service when I joined Irene, a fellow football fan, during a much anticipated match between my team, the mighty…

By Sarah-Jane Outten Each month in my column I like to introduce you to a small business or entrepreneur based in Cardiff. I like to champion their skills, creativity and hard work. I took myself and my little family off to Cardiff’s International Food Festival in Cardiff Bay. In its seventeenth year it is fair to say that…

Modern day living, healthy eating, parenting, work life balance, being thinner, taller, faster, fitter……. Clean eating, getting enough sleep, having enough friends, earning a good living, enjoying my job……Practising mindfulness, having a home worthy of an interior magazine, helping the kids do their homework, being kind, noble, wise and calm, looking like you have got it all together when underneath you are paddling like a duck on a merry go round on full speed. Blah, blah, bleurgh! How much stress…

By Sarah-Jane Outten Just when you think you know all there is to know in our fair city, something comes along that takes you quite by surprise. That’s one of the things that I love about Cardiff; it is ever changing, growing and inspiring. This month my journey to find something a little different took me away from the centre of Cardiff and I found myself on an industrial estate in Tremorfa. It was a Sunday morning so I imagined…

Why is it called a Menopause when it doesn’t affect men? Nor does it mean you have to pause? Surely there’s been some error? After the onset of female puberty and childbirth surely we’re done and it’s time to share the biological derailment that Mother Nature decrees should happen at a certain point in a woman’s life? We don’t really need to be told to slow down at this junction of our lives too! I have a friend, let’s call…

By Sarah Jane Outten It’s no secret that I love Cardiff. Our city is so diverse and rich in culture that there really is something for everyone.  We are blessed with an army of entrepreneurs that are varied and brave. This is good news for Cardiff, they encourage our city to grow, and we have so much on offer here that our fair city is one of the most sought after in the UK. What makes Cardiff particularly special is…
